Otsuka Ai – フレンジャー [11th Single]

Posted on: July 21, 2008

Otsuka Ai’s 11th single, entitled フレンジャー, was released on 04.12.06. The title track was used as the CM song for the au mobile service Toshiba MUSIC-HDD W4T1 as well as being the theme song for the TV show SPORTS Uruguzu. The B-side was used as the music.jp CM song.

フレンジャー is a fun happy song. Opening the song is a cool rock-filled instrumental with a catchiness and happiness that stands out to the listener. The first verse features some nice vocals that capture the song’s atmosphere. The chorus stands out as Ai’s vocals continue to capture that happiness strongly. The pure instrumental section spotlights that fun rock sound enjoyably, making the listener take notice. For its upbeat energy, the song hits the listener strongly and enjoyably.

The B-side is the relaxing uptempo number, 甘い気持ちまるかじり. The song starts off with the chorus, carrying a comforting feeling that entices the listener. Her vocals here sound very sweet and compliment the music well. Following is a section of pure instrumentation, that puts an emphasis on the guitar. During the first verse, Ai’s vocals sound great and have a certain catchiness that makes it enjoyable. The full pure instrumental section is an integral part of the song that stands out very strongly. With a great feeling, the B-side is very enjoyable.

In order to promote the single, a PV for  フレンジャー was made. To match the fun feeling of the song, the video captures that same element. The video opens up with Ai receiving her permit to drive a motocycle and then going off to Taiwan. Other scenes include Ai at a bowling ally (including drawing a face on a bowling ball), Ai at a clothing store and Ai singing with two guys playfully fighting.

Single Ranking: B +

Otsuka Ai’s 11th single consists of two songs: the upbeat and happy フレンジャー and the softer 甘い気持ちまるかじり. Both songs are nice, although not as noteworthy as most of Ai’s songs.
